Money In Ukraine

Currency And Exchange Rate
The Ukrainian national currency is Hryvnia (UAH). Hryvnia is in circulation since September 2, 1996, and replaced the previous temporary currency - kupono-karbovanets (coupons). The word Hryvnia comes from the Kievan Rus times (approx. XI century), and means a silver ingot of 160 - 200g. Nowadays Hryvnias are banknotes (1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 hrn) or coins (1 hrn).

One hryvna = 100 kopecks.

You can see the current official exchange rate of Ukrainian National Bank here: finance.com.ua finance.com.ua

Cash Exchange

Money can be exchanged at banks, exchange desks at hotels, shops or licensed exchange windows. Passport is not required for exchange operations. Exchange rate might differ from the official NBU rate.

USD and EURO are the most popular currencies in exchange booths. Other currencies are more difficult to exchange and have lower rates due to minor circulation in Ukraine.

Payment Cards And Travelers' Checks
VISA, MasterCard / EuroCard are accepted widely in major hotels, restaurants, casinos and stores. Owners of American Express, Dinners may experience problems when using their cards even in regional centers and Ukraine capital.

Credit cards can be cached in ATMs. Most of Ukrainian ATMs provide the local currency only. Traveler's checks and credit cards can be cashed less out of a bank fee (which is 1-4% of the amount) at the majority of banks.

Most popular in Ukraine Travelers checks are Thomas Cook and Visa, but be aware - the traveler checks are NOT ACCEPTED for payments in Ukraine. You would need to visit a bank first and cash the check there. The procedure is quite time-consuming in general. Checks are accepted from check owners only. You will be asked to present a receipt of check's purchase and your passport.

We are back in New Zealand after several weeks away, and wanted to thank you for your assistance and advice during the planning for our trip to Ukraine, and particularly your prompt action when we had to change our arrival dates at the last moment. We were so pleased that we were still able to spend the time we had planned in Odessa and Kiev, and at least we managed to see Lviv as we had hoped, even if not for quite as long as we had planned. So thank you - we were grateful for your help.

All the arrangements you made for us went very smoothly, and we especially enjoyed the train travel. We had a great time, and enjoyed the country and the people. It was good to meet you, Irina, especially after you sorted our changed schedule out for us, and we are sorry to have missed "the other Irina" who had done all the initial planning with us.

Ukraine is wonderful and we were sorry to leave. Once again, thank you both so much for your planning, concern and prompt emails leading up to our trip, and your first-rate help when we needed it. Your organisation was of the highest quality and we will be recommending your firm to our local agent and friends.

Regards

Marilyn & Kel New Zealand
