Want to see all Ukraine in one day? Quite possible in the village of Pyrohiv which is nearby Kiev. But be prepared for a 2-3 century back in time shift.
This open air Museum is a collection of Ukrainian folk architecture and items of the 16th-20th centuries. Date of the museum foundation goes back to 1969, when it was not quite understandable to the Soviet authorities why those obsessed ethnographers were collecting old “lumber” from all around Ukraine. The museum was opened only 7 years later. Quite a long time but just think how much an effort it took, on a shoe-string budget, to find, obtain a permit, disassemble, bring to Pyrohiv and assemble back these beautiful wooden huts, churches, windmills, administrative and small trade village buildings. Nowadays the museum has about 300 architectural exhibits, majority of which are original village buildings from every region of Ukraine. Some buildings were reconstructed by projects of historical architects. The pride of the museum is a 16th century wooden hut of a commoner, the only building of this kind remaining in Ukraine. Everyday life items of the passed centuries decorate and enrich buildings interiors. Total number of such items equals 40 000, these are folk dresses, clay and wooden utensils, furniture, metal and glassware, carpets and embroidery, musical instruments and folk paintings. The idea of the museum is a reconstruction of a Ukrainian village of the passed centuries. And a team of museum enthusiasts succeeded greatly. Hilly green landscape envelopes the beautiful village, with windmills perched on the highest hill, small ponds and orchards, wooden church and a silhouette of a grove behind. It is quiet and romantic if not a Holiday; otherwise - folk singing and music, colorfully dressed people around. You might be lucky to see Ukrainian ceremonies and rites if you come either on Maslenitsa (plus, try blyns or Ukrainian pancakes), or Ivana Kupala, or any other holiday.
