A popular pilgrimage site, the Basilian Monastery in Krekhiv takes root in the long-ago 16th century when two monks from Kiev Lavra settled in a cave in the densely forested area in proximity to Vinnyki village. Hetman Zolkiewski, who was granted to call Zhovkva the Vinnyki village he owned, supported the monks and offered land to build the monastery. With roaming Tatar hordes, the monastery gained fortification walls and towers with a deep ditch around it. Time was passing, and the monastery prospered. In the beginning of the 18th century there were built St. Nicholas Church, the main temple of the nowadays monastery. By the end of the 19th century, the Basilian monastery has grown into one of the main centers of Ukrainian monasticism. Soviet rule has crossed the monastery activity out and has caused dissolution and ruination. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Basilian monastery has reopened. Continuous reconstruction has started after 1990; more than 90 monks have arrived there from the different parts of Ukraine. There was built a Ukrainian Baroque bell tower and a wooden church. The monastery is notorious for its miracle working icons of Mother of God and St. Nicholas.
In the old times hetmans Ivan Mazepa, Bogdan Khmelnitsky, and Petro Doroshenko have sponsored and contributed into the monastery development greatly. It is the shrine where these outstanding Ukrainians have been praying, listening to the monastic choir and restoring. The centuries went by, and the monastery is still the same powerful place to visit …

Hello Irina and the Staff at Unipress!

I have been back in the U.S. now for a couple of weeks since my trip to
Ukraine. Everything went smoothly and the potential problems were avoided or
smoothed over due to Unipress' excellent help with the planning of my trip.
Special thank you to Alex who really took care of me at all the meeting and
transfer points in Kiev. Tell him I really appreciate his expert help. He
was always there for me and his knowledgeable advice and suggestions were
very good! I know he must have been tired of waiting for me at Borispol
Airport when I flew in from Germany but was delayed. Nevertheless, as soon
as I got through Ukraine Customs, there he was, at the front of all the
waiting chauffeurs and drivers!

I am contemplating another trip to Ukraine in the future and would use
Unipress' services again without hesitation.
Thanks again, Unipress.
