One of best Universities in Ukraine according to the current rankings, the Taras Shevchenko University possesses the red building of impressive size. The building is a symbol of the University and the Ukrainian higher education system in general.
Length of the façade of this major and eldest 4-story campus building equals 145.68m. Russian architect Beretti constructed the building within couple of years after the University foundation. Father the founder was Nocholas I of Russia. He signed a Charter about University and named it after St.Volodymyr, Baptist of the Kievan Rus. Colors of the stripes on the Order of St.Volodymyr correspond to the color of the building – it is all red with black lines on tops and bottoms of the columns. It is also said that Nicholas II of Russia had ordered to paint the whole building red. It was Tsar’s answer to the students’ protests during WWI as reminder about Ukrainian soldiers’ blood shed on the battlegrounds.
The University has received its current name in 1939. The most famous Ukrainian poet and artist, Taras Shevchenko had been employed by the St.Volodymyr University in 1845-1846. But even if not, the greatness of Shevchenko’s figure in the Ukrainian literature is such that naming the best University after him is quite obvious.

Dear Unipress:
Many, many thanks for the great job you did in helping me book my June 2002 trip to Ukraine.

I worked with Tanya, and she was great. She worked very hard in helping arrange my hotels and transportation. She was always very prompt in her replies to my emails. Since I speak no Russian or Ukrainian, her excellent English was appreciated.

Unipress got me excellent value for my money in the accommodations you arranged.

Travel to Ukraine is a little more difficult than travel to other nations in Europe (although well worth the extra effort!) I would strongly recommend Unipress to others seeking to travel to your wonderful country.

John Berthoud Arlington, Virginia USA
