The Stavry-Kaya Cliff

Operation: year round
Location: Yalta

The rocky peak of the Stavry-Kaya Cliff climbs to 663 meters above sea level. The name is translated from Greek and Turkic as a “cross cliff”. A legend relates to a massive stone cross that was built by Taur, an extremely strong man who had lived here in the remote past. Taur had fallen ill after an unfortunate hunt, started losing his notorious strength and had grown very sad. His mother had been dying, and from the deathbed she had sent her weakened son to mountains for building a cross in the highest place. When the work had been accomplished the strength, vigor and good mood had returned to Taur. It had been his mother’s last will. The old woman had known this task would have cured her son: the mountains, hiking, fresh air and some work make miracles and keep people healthy.
By the way, the Stavry-Kaya Cliff is one of the highlights of the Botkinskaya Trail, also named as the Trail of Health.
Nowadays a wooden Orthodox cross is planted on the top of the cliff, from where the miraculous views open - Big Yalta, green mountains and the endless sea. If you follow the Taur’s example in the part of mountain climbing and do ascend the steep Stavry-Kaya Cliff, beware there are neither barriers nor roomy viewing platform at the top, so be very cautious and focused.

We are back in New Zealand after several weeks away, and wanted to thank you for your assistance and advice during the planning for our trip to Ukraine, and particularly your prompt action when we had to change our arrival dates at the last moment. We were so pleased that we were still able to spend the time we had planned in Odessa and Kiev, and at least we managed to see Lviv as we had hoped, even if not for quite as long as we had planned. So thank you - we were grateful for your help.

All the arrangements you made for us went very smoothly, and we especially enjoyed the train travel. We had a great time, and enjoyed the country and the people. It was good to meet you, Irina, especially after you sorted our changed schedule out for us, and we are sorry to have missed "the other Irina" who had done all the initial planning with us.

Ukraine is wonderful and we were sorry to leave. Once again, thank you both so much for your planning, concern and prompt emails leading up to our trip, and your first-rate help when we needed it. Your organisation was of the highest quality and we will be recommending your firm to our local agent and friends.

Regards

Marilyn & Kel New Zealand
