Ukrainian Transport Information

Air

Majority of big cities in Ukraine has air connection with Kiev. Tickets for domestic flights for non-Ukrainians might be more expensive than for Ukrainians. Best air connection with other countries goes via Kiev.

Some domestic flights are not very reliable in terms of schedule - it is a good idea to make sure that the flight you have chosen is made on regular basis.

Please, note most domestic air tickets can be obtained in Ukraine only.

Extensive network of railroad connects Ukraine with many European and Asian countries. Trains are cheap though slow and not very comfortable. First class compartments are mostly air-conditioned (very important in summertime) and have 2 berths (some trains do not have 1st class option), second class has 4 berths. We recommend to buy tickets for the whole compartment, especially when traveling alone. Prices for foreign citizens and Ukrainians are the same. Trains are the most popular and easy way to make intercity trips in Ukraine.

Sea
The major part of sea connection is made via the Black sea ports of Odessa, Sevastopol and Yalta. The passenger vessels sailing between the Crimea peninsula and Odessa do not have stable schedule and rates, currently. Therefore tickets for these cruises and ferries are hardly bookable. The major part of ferries serves Istanbul, Turkey destination. They provide with several categories of accommodation, meals, entertainment programs, etc. On the top of it, ferries make cargo transportation including cars, vans etc.

Public City Transport
Operates from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Bus, trolley bus and tram system is rather slow, but is a cheap way to travel within cities. Prices range from 30 kopecks to 2 hryvnas.

Taxi is comparatively cheap for Russian speaking passengers. Probably everywhere situation with taxi is like this if one speaks a foreign language price for taxi goes up immediately. There are numerous taxi services, orders are taken via phone. There can be hired a taxi right on the street simply by putting out your hand. Be wary of taking a car having more than one passenger. Price is to be agreed upon beforehand.

My husband Greg and I, must tell you how wonderful our trip to Ukraine was. Because of your wonderful services and personal touches, everything went extremely well.

We had an amazing journey and love your country. Greg's mother was born in Berdyansk, lived in Kharkov and her father was from Poltava. We visited each of those cities as well as Kiev and Mariupol and enjoyed every minute.

The accommodations you recommended were exceptionally nice. We especially loved our apartment in Kiev and Hotel Kievsky in Kharkov. The staff of the hotel could not have been more accommodating and the room itself was clean, comfortable, cozy and convenient. The apartment was just beautiful and had a great location.

We had a couple of glitches in Mariupol at the Spartak with the electricity going out for many hours, the phone never working and of course no hot water which was not unexpected. The one thing we wish they had was an elevator since we had heavy luggage and were on the fifth floor. None of those things, however, were enough to take away our enjoyment of the room or our stay in Mariupol.

We were stunned by how nice the airport in Mariupol was. It was not only lovely but it was efficient and the flight was nicer than most domestic flights in the US as far as service and food were concerned.

All in all, we couldn't have had a more wonderful adventure and YOU were such an integral part of all of that. From the moment we were met at Borispol and given our vouchers and tickets until the time we left, we knew we were in good hands--yours. I even text messaged Irina about a possible concern when we were about to leave (concerning customs) and she responded immediately and accurately.

What can we say but THANK YOU SO MUCH! We plan to return in a few years and have recommended the trip and especially your service to all of our friends in Orlando, Florida, USA. I hope they get the opportunity to travel to Ukraine and to experience your hospitality.

All the Best,

Candy and Greg, USA
